Peak Performers has partnered with a Texas State Agency to assist in their search for a Senior Business Data Analyst in Austin, Tx. In this position, you will be responsible for working across a legacy application, its underlying database, business stakeholders, and an incoming vendor to recover, document, and translate existing reporting logic into requirements for a modernized reporting solution.

Major duties

• Reverse engineer legacy reports into documented business logic for a modernized reporting solution.
• Write and run SQL against the legacy database to trace field lineage, validate assumptions, reconcile report totals, and profile source data.
• Interview business users, subject matter experts, and the incumbent vendor to capture report intent, usage, and requirements.
• Build and maintain a data dictionary and business glossary for report-related terms.
• Identify reports that are redundant, unused, or duplicative and recommend them for retirement instead of migration.
• Translate legacy logic into future-state report requirements, acceptance criteria, and test cases for the new vendor.
• Support build, testing, and UAT by serving as the day-to-day point of contact for vendor clarification, defect triage, feedback capture, and sign-off.
• Track open questions, assumptions, and decisions in a shared log for business stakeholders and both vendors.

What are we looking for?

• 8 years of experience as a business analyst supporting data, reporting, or system migration initiatives.
• 5 years of strong SQL experience, including complex joins, window functions, CTEs, aggregation, and working with stored procedures or views written by others.
• 5 years of hands-on data profiling experience using a tool or SQL written from scratch to identify value domains, null patterns, cardinality, and data quality issues.
• 5 years of strong requirements-writing experience, producing clear, testable, and specific requirements a third-party vendor can build from without follow-up.
• 5 years of experience interviewing non-technical business users and eliciting intent and business rules that have not previously been documented.
• 3 years of experience running or supporting UAT, including defect triage and stakeholder sign-off.
• 3 years of experience working with external vendors on requirements clarification, delivery review, and issue resolution.
• Preferred: 3 years of experience with Power BI.
